Eastern Tiger Swallowtail
The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail is seen from New England to Florida and as far west as the Great Plains. The female can be up to 5.5" and can be distinguished from the male by the blue spots. 9x12" watercolor on Aquabord.
For the Ancient Greeks, the transformation of the butterfly from pupa to adult was a metaphore of the soul's resurrection and immortality. In fact, the Ancient Greek word for butterfly is a word which also means "soul" or "mind".
